Georgia in Winter: The Complete Snow Guide to Tbilisi, Gudauri, Kazbegi & Bakuriani

georgia in winter snow in gudauri and kazbegi caucasus mountains travel guide

Georgia in winter is one of the easiest ways to see real snow without flying to Europe. This guide is about Georgia, the country in the Caucasus — Tbilisi, Gudauri, Kazbegi and Bakuriani — not the US state. In just two to three hours from Tbilisi you can stand in deep snow at 2,200 metres, ride a ski lift above the clouds, and be back in the city for dinner and Georgian wine the same evening. Below is everything you need to plan a trip to Georgia in winter: where and when it snows, the weather month by month, the best things to do, winter roads, what to pack and a ready-made itinerary.

❄️ Snow season: December–March

🌡️ Tbilisi: about 0 °C to 9 °C

⛷️ Gudauri: 2 hours from Tbilisi

✈️ About 3 hours' flight from Dubai

Quick Answer: Is Georgia Good to Visit in Winter?

Yes — especially if you want snow. Georgia in winter combines two very different trips in one: a mild, lively capital where daytime temperatures usually stay above freezing, and high Caucasus mountains where snow is almost guaranteed from late December to March. You do not need to choose between city and snow, because the snow is only a short drive away.

Winter is also quieter and better value than summer in most of the country. Tbilisi hotels are easier to book, the old town feels local again, and the mountain resorts are full of energy without the extreme prices of the Alps. The only real trade-off is flexibility: mountain roads can close for a few hours after heavy snowfall, so a good winter plan always leaves a little room.

Where to See Snow in Georgia in Winter

Snow in Georgia depends almost entirely on altitude. Tbilisi sits at around 400–600 metres and rarely keeps snow, while the Greater and Lesser Caucasus rise to well over 2,000 metres within a few hours' drive. These are the best places for a snowy trip:

Place Altitude From Tbilisi Best for
Gudauri About 2,000–3,200 m About 2–2.5 hours Skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, first-time snow
Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) About 1,740 m About 3 hours Gergeti Trinity Church in snow, Mount Kazbek views
Bakuriani About 1,700 m About 3 hours Families, gentle slopes, sledging, pine forests
Goderdzi About 2,000+ m Best reached from Batumi Deep snow, quieter slopes, combining with the Black Sea coast
Svaneti (Mestia) About 1,500 m (slopes much higher) Long drive or domestic flight Wild mountain scenery, Tetnuldi and Hatsvali slopes, longer trips

For most visitors — especially families and first-time snow travellers from India and the Gulf — Gudauri and Kazbegi are the easiest winning combination. They sit on the same road north of Tbilisi, so you can see snow, the famous mountain church and the ski resort in a single day. Not sure which resort fits you? Our Gudauri vs Bakuriani guide compares them in detail.

Does It Snow in Tbilisi?

Only occasionally. Tbilisi gets a few snowy days most winters, but the snow usually melts within a day or two. If seeing snow is the main reason for your trip, do not rely on the capital — plan at least one day in the mountains. The good news is that Tbilisi's mild winter makes it a comfortable base: you can walk the old town, visit the sulphur baths and enjoy the restaurants without heavy snow gear, then head to the mountains for the real winter experience.

Georgia in December

December is when Georgia in winter really begins. The first heavy snow usually arrives in the high mountains, and the ski season in Gudauri and Bakuriani typically opens in the second half of the month, depending on snowfall. Tbilisi fills with Christmas lights and New Year markets, and the city builds up to a huge New Year's Eve celebration with fireworks across every hillside.

  • Snow: very likely in Gudauri and Kazbegi, especially from mid-December; less reliable early in the month.
  • Atmosphere: festive, with New Year decorations everywhere. Georgians celebrate Christmas on 7 January, so the holiday season runs well into the new year.
  • Good to know: the last week of December and the first days of January are the busiest and most expensive time in the ski resorts — book early.

Travelling for the holidays? Our Christmas in Georgia guide covers New Year in Tbilisi, Orthodox Christmas and festive trips to the mountains.

Georgia in January

January is the coldest month and the most reliable time for snow in Georgia. The mountains are fully white, the ski slopes are at their best, and the landscapes around Kazbegi look like a postcard. On 7 January, Georgians celebrate Orthodox Christmas with church services and the colourful Alilo processions through the streets of Tbilisi.

  • Snow: deep and dependable in all mountain areas.
  • Weather: Tbilisi around freezing at night and mild in the day; Gudauri well below freezing, especially in the wind.
  • Good to know: early January is crowded because of local holidays; from mid-January the resorts become calmer and prices often ease.

Georgia in February

February is often the best-kept secret of Georgia in winter. The snow is still deep, the days are getting longer, and the holiday crowds have gone home. It is an excellent month for skiing, for a romantic winter break in Kazbegi, or for families who want snow without the New Year rush.

  • Snow: excellent in Gudauri, Bakuriani and Kazbegi.
  • Weather: slowly warming in Tbilisi by the end of the month.
  • Good to know: this is one of the best value periods of the winter for hotels and private tours.

Skiing usually continues in Gudauri until late March or early April, so March can also work if you want snow in the mountains and the first spring days in Tbilisi. For the full year, see our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Georgia.

Georgia in Winter: Weather Month by Month

These are typical approximate temperatures. Mountain weather changes quickly, so always check the forecast a few days before your trip.

Month Tbilisi (day / night) Gudauri (day / night) Snow in the mountains
December About 8 °C / 1 °C About −2 °C / −9 °C Likely, best from mid-month
January About 7 °C / −1 °C About −4 °C / −12 °C Almost guaranteed
February About 9 °C / 0 °C About −3 °C / −11 °C Almost guaranteed
March About 13 °C / 3 °C About 0 °C / −7 °C Good on the slopes, melting lower down

For visitors from India and the Gulf, the cold in Gudauri will feel strong at first — especially in the wind at the top of the lifts — but with the right layers it is very comfortable, and the sunshine on snowy days is beautiful.

Best Things to Do in Georgia in Winter

1. Touch snow for the first time in Gudauri

Gudauri is the most popular place to see snow in Georgia. Even without skiing, you can ride the gondola, walk in deep snow, build a snowman, try snow tubing or a snowmobile ride, and enjoy hot drinks with a view over the Caucasus. For many families from India, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, this is the moment of the whole trip. Our private Gudauri day trip from Tbilisi gives you a full day in the snow with your own driver-guide.

2. Ski or snowboard — even as a beginner

Gudauri has long, wide, open slopes above the tree line, while Bakuriani is gentler and ideal for children and beginners. Both resorts have ski schools with English-speaking instructors and equipment rental, so you do not need to bring any gear. Lift passes are far cheaper than in the Alps.

3. Paragliding over the snowy Caucasus

Tandem paragliding flights operate in Gudauri in winter when the weather allows. You fly with an experienced pilot over snowy slopes and valleys — no experience needed, and one of the most unforgettable photos you will take in Georgia.

4. Gergeti Trinity Church in the snow

The 14th-century church above Kazbegi, with Mount Kazbek behind it, is even more dramatic in winter. The road up to the church is steep and snowy, so in winter the final climb is usually done by 4x4. Our Kazbegi travel guide has everything you need to know.

5. Ride the Kukushka train through snowy forests

The historic narrow-gauge Kukushka train between Borjomi and Bakuriani is expected to resume in December 2026 after years of rehabilitation. A slow ride through snowy pine forests and over the bridge commissioned from Gustave Eiffel is one of the most magical winter experiences in Georgia. Read the full Kukushka train guide.

6. Warm up in the Tbilisi sulphur baths

After a cold day in the mountains, nothing beats the natural hot sulphur baths of Abanotubani, the old bath district of Tbilisi. Book a private room for your family or group — it is relaxing, traditional and perfect in winter.

7. Taste Georgian wine by the fireplace in Kakheti

Kakheti, Georgia's wine region, is calm and cosy in winter. Family wineries welcome guests by the fire with qvevri wine, fresh bread and hearty Georgian dishes. It is a great day trip when the mountain roads are snowy. See our private Kakheti wine tour.

8. Enjoy New Year and Christmas in Tbilisi

Tbilisi celebrates New Year's Eve with fireworks across the whole city, followed by Orthodox Christmas on 7 January. The festive lights, markets and warm restaurants make the capital a wonderful place to spend the holidays.

Roads and Safety: Driving in Georgia in Winter

Main roads in Georgia are cleared quickly after snowfall, but the mountains need respect. The road from Tbilisi to Gudauri is normally open all winter. The section beyond Gudauri over the Jvari Pass (about 2,379 m) to Kazbegi can close temporarily after heavy snow or when there is avalanche risk — sometimes for a few hours, occasionally for a day. Our Georgian Military Highway driving guide explains the route in detail.

  • Self-driving in winter is possible but stressful if you are not used to snow and ice. Winter tyres and chains are essential on mountain roads.
  • A private driver who drives these roads every day is the safest option, and can change the plan on the spot if a road is closed — for example swapping Kazbegi for Kakheti that day.
  • Keep one flexible day in your itinerary for mountain weather, especially if you have an international flight to catch.

What to Wear in Georgia in Winter: Packing List

Most visitors to Georgia in winter come from warm countries — they over-pack for Tbilisi and under-pack for the mountains. This simple list works for both:

  • A warm, windproof winter jacket — the most important item.
  • Thermal base layers (top and leggings) for days in Gudauri or Kazbegi.
  • Waterproof boots with a good grip — snow boots can also be rented in the ski resorts.
  • Gloves, a warm hat and a scarf or neck warmer.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen — the sun on fresh snow is very bright at altitude.
  • Moisturiser and lip balm — the mountain air is cold and dry.
  • Comfortable shoes and a lighter coat for walking around Tbilisi.

Ski jackets, ski trousers, helmets, skis and snowboards can all be rented in Gudauri and Bakuriani, so there is no need to buy expensive equipment for one trip.

Ski resort hotels are most expensive between late December and the first week of January, and cheaper from mid-January to March.
