Description
This private Borjomi and Bakuriani day trip from Tbilisi combines Georgia's most famous spa town with one of its most charming experiences: a ride on the Kukushka train, the historic narrow-gauge mountain railway that has climbed from Borjomi to the ski resort of Bakuriani since 1902. Your own car and driver-guide take care of everything else — from your Tbilisi hotel in the morning to your door in the evening.
The Kukushka Train: Georgia's Legendary Mountain Railway
The Borjomi–Bakuriani railway, known to everyone in Georgia as the Kukushka ("little cuckoo"), was built at the end of the 19th century and carried its first passengers in January 1902. The line is just 37 km long, but in that distance it climbs from about 820 m in Borjomi to 1,700 m in Bakuriani, winding slowly through pine and fir forests, past the villages of Tsaghveri, Tsemi and Libani, over bridges and through tunnels. The ride takes about 2.5 hours — slow on purpose, so there is plenty of time to enjoy the views.
The most famous part of the route is the Eiffel Bridge near Tsagveri, commissioned by the Romanov family and designed by the French engineer Gustave Eiffel, the creator of the Eiffel Tower. Crossing it in a small mountain train is one of those moments that stays with you.
The Kukushka Train Is Back on Track
The Kukushka stopped running in 2020. In October 2026 Georgia's Minister of Economy announced that the rehabilitation of the line is nearly complete and that the train is expected to return in December 2026, with new carriages designed to match the historic character of the railway. We confirm the current train schedule for your date when you book, so you always know exactly what to expect. For the full history, route details and travel tips, read our complete Kukushka train guide.
Your Route: Borjomi Park, the Kukushka and Bakuriani
After pickup from your hotel, the drive west from Tbilisi follows the Mtkvari River into the forested Borjomi Gorge. In Borjomi you walk through Borjomi Central Park, the 19th-century park around the springs that made Borjomi mineral water famous across the former Russian Empire, and you can taste the water straight from the source.
Your driver then takes you to the Kukushka station. You board the train, and while you climb through the forest, your driver drives up separately and waits for you at Bakuriani station. Bakuriani is a relaxed pine-forest mountain resort: in winter it is covered in snow and ideal for sledging, skiing or simply walking in the snow; in the warmer months it is green, cool and peaceful. After free time and an optional lunch at a local restaurant, you return to Tbilisi by private car.

Beautiful in Every Season
- Winter (December–March): a snow-covered forest from the train window and real winter in Bakuriani — the most magical time for this trip.
- Spring (April–May): fresh green forests, rivers full of snowmelt and quiet roads.
- Summer (June–August): a cool mountain escape from the Tbilisi heat, with meadows and pine air in Bakuriani.
- Autumn (September–November): golden and red forests all along the gorge — a photographer's favourite.
See our Best Time to Visit Georgia guide for more on each season.
What If the Kukushka Is Not Running?
Old mountain railways sometimes pause for maintenance or bad weather. If the train is not running on your date, the day still works beautifully: your driver takes you up the same scenic road to Bakuriani by car, with photo stops along the gorge and a visit to the Green Monastery, a small medieval monastery hidden in the Borjomi forest, and the cost of the train ticket is refunded. We will always tell you as soon as we know.
Snow Days in Bakuriani
In winter Bakuriani is one of Georgia's two main ski resorts, with gentle slopes that are ideal for families and first-time skiers. You are free to rent equipment, buy a lift pass or try sledging at your own pace — these are paid locally. Not sure whether Bakuriani or Gudauri suits you better? Read our Gudauri vs Bakuriani guide, or stay longer with our Georgia Winter Tour Package.
What to Bring
Warm layers (Bakuriani is much colder than Tbilisi, especially in winter), comfortable shoes for the park, sunglasses for the snow, and a little cash in Georgian lari for lunch or snow activities — see our Money in Georgia guide.

I just wanna commend the awesome services that this travel tour company did to An Amazing and Unforgettable 40th Birthday Experience in Georgia! 🇬🇪❤️ I had planned to celebrate my birthday in Georgia after discovering your page on Instagram, but I never expected that, in less than 24 hours, you would be able to arrange such a wonderful trip for me! From start to finish, everything was smooth, enjoyable, and truly special. You made me feel just how memorable my birthday could be. From picking me up at the airport, taking me to different tourist attractions around Georgia, and fulfilling my ultimate birthday wish of experiencing paragliding (which was absolutely amazing!), to ensuring that I arrived safely at my hotel, every moment was incredible. I will never forget how you treated and looked after me throughout the entire tour. You made sure that I was comfortable, safe, and well taken care of at every step of the journey. Even during my hotel stay, you went the extra mile to ensure that everything was taken care of. I was also pleasantly surprised by your birthday gift waiting for me when I arrived at the hotel! I never expected such a thoughtful gesture, and it made my special day even more memorable. Thank you for making me feel so loved and special on my birthday. ❤️🎂 I am truly grateful that I chose your company. If I ever travel to Georgia again, I would definitely choose you once more! You made me feel at home, even when I was far away from my own home, and that is something I will always cherish. Once again, my heartfelt thanks to each and every person who became part of my Georgia adventure on 14 October 2026. Your kindness, hospitality, thoughtfulness, and excellent service made this journey more than just a trip. You helped create beautiful memories that I will treasure forever. Our family trip to Georgia was absolutely wonderful, and we couldn’t have asked for a better travel company to organize it. Everything was planned so smoothly from the moment we arrived until the day we left, making the entire trip easy, relaxing, and enjoyable for all of us. What really stood out was their exceptional service. They were available for us literally 24/7. No matter what we needed or what questions we had, they responded quickly and were always happy to help. It gave us so much peace of mind, especially while traveling with young children. A very special thank you to our driver, Rezo. Although he doesn’t speak English, language was never a barrier. His kindness, warm smile, and thoughtful gestures spoke louder than words. He was incredibly patient with our family, especially with our 10 month old son, always making sure we were comfortable. He was punctual every single day, and even on the few occasions when we kept him waiting for almost 30 minutes, he greeted us with the same smile and understanding. His professionalism, patience, and genuine care made every journey enjoyable. For our cultural sightseeing days, we were accompanied by our tour guide, Eka, and she was simply outstanding. She speaks excellent English and has an impressive knowledge of Georgia’s history, culture, traditions, and local life. Every place we visited became so much more meaningful because of her stories and explanations. Beyond her knowledge, Eka has such a warm and caring personality that we genuinely felt like she was part of our family rather than just our tour guide. She was wonderful with our children, always patient, engaging, and making sure everyone was enjoying themselves. Her passion for her country is truly inspiring, and she made us fall even more in love with Georgia. Thank you to the entire team for creating such unforgettable memories for our family. Your professionalism, kindness, attention to detail, and genuine hospitality exceeded all of our expectations. We highly recommend your services to anyone planning a trip to Georgia, and we will definitely be booking with you again on our next visit. Started recommending them to my family and friends already!Posted on Google![]()

We had an amazing experience. The coordinator was very kind and responsive, and helped us arrange the schedule smoothly according to the places we wanted to visit. Communication was easy and comfortable from the beginning, and every question was answered quickly. Our driver was also excellent. He drove very smoothly and safely, and the music he chose during the drive made the trip even more enjoyable. We also really appreciated that he recommended several places during the tour. Some of the spontaneous stops were not in our original plan, but they turned out to be some of the best parts of the day. Everything felt flexible, comfortable, and well organized. Thanks to the great communication, safe driving, and thoughtful local recommendations, we were able to enjoy the trip much more than expected. I would definitely recommend this service!Posted on Google![]()
